The United States should accept responsibility for any further tensions or bloodshed in the region after Washington’s recognition of Beit-ul-Moqaddas (Jerusalem) as the capital of the Zionist regime, Iranian defense minister said in Tehran on Monday.
“The US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Beit-ul-Moqaddas is a deep conspiracy against the oppressed Palestinians,” Brigadier General Amir Hatami said at a conference, madaresharghi reported.
“(Trump‘s) step will hasten the destruction of the Zionist regime and will boost the unity of Muslims,” Hatami said.
The army’s Chief of Staff, General Mohammad Baqeri, also said Trump’s “foolish move” could be seen as the beginning of a new intifada, or Palestinian uprising.
Trump’s declaration has been followed by near universal condemnation and diplomatic fallout, with warnings it risks setting off a new round of violence in the turbulent Middle East.
He instructed his administration to begin the process of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the ancient city.
It also drew criticism from every other UN Security Council member at an emergency meeting on Friday.
Both Macron and EU Diplomatic Chief Federica Mogherini have criticized Trump’s decision, and there have been ongoing tensions between Netanyahu and European Union officials over Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank.
The dramatic shift in Washington’s Beit-ul-Moqaddas policy also triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and other Muslim countries.
On Sunday, violent clashes erupted outside the US Embassy in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut during a protest against the US president’s decision.
Demonstrators burnt tires as well as the US and Israeli flags as they pushed to break through barbed wires erected by security forces around the embassy complex.
