A Kurdish film has found its way to Action on Film Festival (AOF) in the United States to present the actual pain inflicted to Kurdish Yezidis at the hands of Islamic State (IS).

Madaresharghi _ Titled ‘Under Black’, the film is directed by Kurdish filmmaker Shirin Jihani. The 24-minutes-long documentary includes interviews with Yezidi women survivors of IS captivity, most of who were reportedly subjected to sexual abuse, torture and forced into religious conversion, BasNews reported.

The word ‘black’ in the film’s title has an unhappy connotation of the color of IS’s flag, under which the extremist group justifies its atrocities.

‘Under Black’ went firstly on screen in the Kurdistan Region on 8th March, 2017 which also marks the International Women’s Day.

Fifty films from various countries have been accepted to the Action on Film Festival which starts on 17th August and lasts for nine days.

Issa Mergasouri, the producer, said that the documentary intends to provide the world with a clearer picture of the victims of religious extremism and their brutality against people, among them Kurds. It also hopes to convince the world on the legitimate right of Kurds to statehood, so as to they are protected against further massacres.
