Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif met Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Tuesday and the two officials discussed regional issues and bilateral relations.
This is first visit by an Iranian high-ranking official to Doha after disputes between the Persian Gulf littoral state and Saudi Arabia and its allies in recent months, IRNA reported.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on June 5, over allegations that it supports ‘extremism’ and is too close to Iran — charges Doha has repeatedly denied.
Zarif arrived in Doha on Monday from Oman for talks with the Qatari officials.
Iran’s top diplomat, on Monday October 2 and before heading for Qatar, Zarif reviewed mutual relations and regional developments in a meeting with Sultan Qaboos and his Omani counterpart Yusuf bin Alawi in Muscat.
