Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has lambasted the United States\u2019 new policy toward his country, saying it carries a \u201cmessage of war and bloodshed\u201d in the region.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
\n

\n\tKarzai made the remarks in an interview with the BBC Urdu on Wednesday, adding he believed that Washington\u2019s new policy \u201chas some hidden conspiracy or strategy for this region\u201d, presstv.ir reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in 2014, the US-led occupying forces in Afghanistan officially announced the end of their combat operations in the country, saying they now had a mission to \u201ctrain, advise, and assist\u201d Afghan troops.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration recently permitted the deployment of an additional 3,000 troops to Afghanistan, where the US already has 11,000 forces.<\/p>\n

\n\tKarzai also said Kabul did not favor US military action \u2014 launched from its bases in Afghanistan \u2014 against neighboring Pakistan to purportedly eliminate what Washington calls \u201cterrorists\u2019 safe heavens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have never favored military action against Pakistan; we don\u2019t want that to happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tUS officials have long been frustrated with what they say is Pakistan\u2019s unwillingness to act against militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban and the Haqqani network, a militant group that operates on both the Pakistani and Afghan side of the border.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Tuesday, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, who is the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) directorate, Pakistan\u2019s main spy agency, had maintained relations with \u201cterrorist groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUS Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also told a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday that Washington would try \u201cone more time\u201d to work with Islamabad to curb Pakistani militants before resorting to other measures over Pakistan\u2019s purported support for terror groups operating in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf our best efforts fail, President Trump is prepared to take whatever steps are necessary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tIslamabad, in return, bristles at what it says is a lack of respect by Washington for Pakistan\u2019s sacrifices in the US\u2019s so-called war on terror. Pakistan estimates that there have been 70,000 casualties in militant attacks since it joined the US \u201cwar on terror\u201d after the September 11, 2001\u00a0attacks.<\/p>\n

\n\tKarzai called Pakistan his country\u2019s \u201cbrother,\u201d saying he wanted Islamabad to boost friendship and cooperation with Kabul. \u00a0However, he said that \u201cPakistan will also have to treat Afghanistan as a sovereign and dignified country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in his remarks, Karzai warned India not to fall into line with the US\u2019s approach toward Afghanistan, saying the approach was part of a \u201cbigger strategic game,\u201d which would not bring peace to the region.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also advised New Delhi to maintain an independent approach based on the shared interests of India and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\n\tWashington led a coalition of its allies in an invasion of Afghanistan about 16 years ago to topple the then-Taliban regime. The group then launched a militancy against both foreign forces and the Afghan government and people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
