Saudi Arabia has detained 46 people over their posts on social media amid a heavy-handed crackdown on dissent in the Arab kingdom.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe official Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday that\u00a022 people were arrested for \u201cinciting public opinion\u201d\u00a0on social media and other\u00a0offenses, such as posting content and videos online, presstv.ir reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe report said that investigations had\u00a0been launched into the individuals’ goals, adding that\u00a0a Qatari citizen was\u00a0among the detainees.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt also noted that another 24 people were arrested in the northwestern province of Ha’il for \u201cexploiting social networking sites to promote lies and exaggerations\u201d with the goal of provoking \u201csedition and tribal tensions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSaudi Arabia has launched a severe crackdown on dissent over the past few years, detaining a large number of prominent clerics and activists.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe arrests also come amid speculation that King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud may abdicate in favor of his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also come just over a week after a gender-mixed celebration of Saudi national day in September which, according to analysts, was aimed at highlighting Riyadh\u2019s social and economic reform push, dubbed “Vision 2030.”<\/p>\n
