\n\t\t\tIn two letters addressed to the UN chief and the Security Council chairman, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry has denounced repeated US attacks on civilians and the country’s infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe letters cited a deadly US airstrike on al-Suwar\u00a0town in eastern Dayr al-Zawr Province on Wednesday and a similar air raid on Markadah town in the northwestern Hasakah Province, which\u00a0killed a number of civilians.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe ministry accused the US of being engaged in \u201cwar crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d in Syria under the pretext of fighting Daesh.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDamascus also regretted\u00a0that some countries, which claim to respect human rights and international law, are members of the US-led coalition, urging them to leave\u00a0an alliance that has marred their\u00a0reputation and “shed plenty of the Syrians\u2019 blood in their name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the letters, Syria demanded a swift action by the UN Security Council to stop \u201cbarbarous crimes\u201d and \u201cgross violations\u201d of international humanitarian law by the US and its allies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe US and its allies have been bombing Syria since September 2014.\u00a0The strikes have\u00a0resulted in many civilian casualties and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u2018Dayr al-Zawr to be retaken in a week\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn Thursday,\u00a0fighting raged\u00a0on in Dayr al-Zawr, with one\u00a0Syrian army officer saying the strategic city will\u00a0be recaptured from Daesh in a week.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTerrorists, he said, were using\u00a0heavy weapons, explosive-laden vests and car bombs to slow army advances, which have\u00a0gained momentum in recent months.<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t\t\t\t“The city of Dayr al-Zawr will be liberated in a week\u00a0at the most and we’ll free some of the suburbs too,” the officer identified only as Ibrahim added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\t\t\t“The cost\u00a0will undoubtedly be high\u2026 It’s a challenging battleground. From dense urban areas to lush river banks and even trenches,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEarlier this month, Syrian government forces\u00a0broke the three-year-long Daesh siege on Dayr al-Zawr.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith Daesh’s defense lines broken, a\u00a0ragtag grouping of mostly Kurdish militants supported by the US has also been on the march in a bid to carve out a foothold in the oil- and gas-rich province.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe convergence of the two rival operations has increased tensions in Dayr al-Zawr and raised the possibility of a confrontation between them.<\/p>\n
