In a major U-turn, Turkey has agreed to solely deal with the central Iraqi government over crude oil exports, following a contentious secession referendum held by Iraq\u2019s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, the Baghdad government says.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe office of the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi reported Ankara\u2019s change of mode on Thursday, following a phone call between Abadi and his Turkish counterpart, Binali Yildirim, presstv.ir reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tYildirim \u201cconfirmed the support of his country on all decisions\u201d taken by the Iraqi government, said statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs part of the measures, Turkey would restrict oil export operations to the Baghdad government, it added.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Turkish PM also emphasized Ankara\u2019s \u201ccommitment to cooperate and coordinate fully with the Iraqi government to implement all necessary steps for imposing of federal authorities at land and air ports,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnkara has long been buying oil from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in defiance of Baghdad\u2019s stiff opposition.<\/p>\n

\n\tOil exports serve as the KRG\u2019s main source of income. The Kurdistan region exports an estimated 650,000 barrels of oil per day through Turkey\u2019s Ceyhan pipeline.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkey is furious at the Monday referendum, which saw over 90 percent of the voters say \u2018Yes\u2019 to secession from Iraq, according to regional Kurdish officials.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe unconstitutional referendum, which went ahead despite\u00a0Baghdad\u2019s objections, has sparked angry reactions from the international community and Iraq\u2019s neighbors, particularly Turkey.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe regime in Israel was the only voice supporting the plebiscite.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a strong-worded speech on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said Ankara will seal its border with the Kurdistan region and threatened\u00a0the Kurdish leaders with blocking their key oil exports to other buyers.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkey, which is home to the largest Kurdish population in the region,\u00a0fears that the Kurdistan plebiscite would embolden the outlawed Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) in its push for autonomy in\u00a0southeastern areas at home.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the aftermath of the vote, pressure has been building on officials in Erbil, Kurdistan\u2019s regional capital, over the referendum, with regional carriers, including Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir and Lebanon\u2019s Middle East Airlines submitting to Baghdad\u2019s request to suspend their flights serving Iraqi Kurdistan.<\/p>\n

\n\tQatar Airways also said Thursday that it is cancelling flights to Iraqi Kurdistan from September 29 to Oct 1 at the request of Iraq\u2019s Civil Aviation Authority.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Erbil airport director Talar Faiq Salih told AFP that \u201call international flights without exception to and from Erbil will stop from 6:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Friday following a decision\u201d by the Abadi cabinet.<\/p>\n

\n\tA large number of foreigners working in Erbil were leaving the city on Thursday for fear of being stranded with only a visa issued by the Kurdish authorities and not recognized by Baghdad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
