The United States said it is \u2018deeply disappointed\u2019 by the Iraqi Kurdistan\u2019s \u2018unilateral\u2019 independence referendum, adding it would increase \u2018hardships\u2019 for people living in the region.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
\n

\n\t\u201cWe believe this step will increase instability and hardships for the Kurdistan region and its people,\u201d the State Department said in a statement on Monday, shortly after the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) defied international pressure to cancel the vote, presstv.com reported.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe believe all sides should engage constructively in a dialogue to improve the future of all Iraqis. The United States opposes violence and unilateral moves by any party to alter boundaries,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe department noted that the secession bid would \u2018greatly complicate\u2019 the KRG\u2019s ties with the central Iraqi government, as well as the country\u2019s neighbors.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, it said that Washington\u2019s \u2018historic relationship\u2019 with the people of Kurdistan would remain unchanged despite the move.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Iraqi lawmakers demanded that government troops be deployed to areas disputed with Kurds.<\/p>\n

\n\tPrime Minister Haider al-Abadi also said that his government would not hold talks about the results of Monday\u2019s secession vote. Abadi said that those who were responsible for the \u2018unconstitutional\u2019 referendum would be duly punished.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned on Monday that Ankara would seal the border with the Iraqi Kurdistan over the contentious plebiscite.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday, Iran also closed its airspace to all flights to and from the Kurdish region at the request of the Iraqi government.<\/p>\n

\n\tTehran has advised against the \u2018unilateral\u2019 scheme, underlining the importance of maintaining the integrity and stability of Iraq amid its ongoing war against Takfiri terrorist groups such as Daesh.<\/p>\n

\n\tSyria has also rejected the independence referendum by Iraq\u2019s Kurds as \u2018unacceptable\u2019, stressing that Damascus only recognizes a unified Iraq.<\/p>\n

\n\tUnderlining the importance of focusing on the war against Daesh, the US State Department warned that the terror group was seeking to exploit instability and discord.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe United States supports a united, federal, democratic and prosperous Iraq and will continue to seek opportunities to assist Iraqis to fulfill their aspirations within the framework of the constitution,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing the vote, the Iraqi army held major military drills with the Turkish military along the common border between the two countries.<\/p>\n
