\n\t\t\tBrigadier Sarhad Qader said the security measure was adopted on Monday night to \u201cprotect the civilians and the communities\u201d in the multi-ethnic city, located 230 kilometers (143 miles) north of Baghdad.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tQader says the curfew will be lifted at 6 a.m. local time (0300 GMT).<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn August 29, 22 of the 24 councilors present in the 41-member Kirkuk council voted in favor of holding the Kurdish independence referendum.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi described the vote by Kirkuk provincial council as a wrong move, adding that the planned referendum was illegal and worthless.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIraqi government\u00a0spokesman, Saad al-Hadithi, also\u00a0lambasted the vote as \u201cillegal and unconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn September 14, the Iraqi parliament voted on the dismissal of 68-year-old Najmiddin Karim as the governor of Kirkuk province.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe provincial council, in return, condemned the decision; with its head Ribwar al-Talabani claiming only the council had the power to remove\u00a0Karim.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tKurdish independence referendum turnout at 76 percent<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeanwhile, Iraq’s Kurdish-language\u00a0Rudaw\u00a0television network, which is affiliated\u00a0to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) led by president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Massoud Barzani, reported that turnout in the Kurdish vote stood at 76 percent at 5:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) \u2013 one hour before polling stations closed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPolling stations opened their doors at 8:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), and closed at 6:00 p.m. (1500 GMT). The final results would be announced within 72 hours.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn Sunday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said the Damascus government doesn’t recognize the Kurdish referendum, denouncing any measure that could break up neighboring Iraq.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened a military intervention in Iraq in response to the Kurdish vote.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cOur military is not (at the border) for nothing. We could arrive suddenly one night,\u201d Erdogan said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Turkish president said his country would take political, economic as well as military measures against KRG\u2019s steps toward independence from Baghdad government.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi told reporters on Monday that the Kurdish independence vote could \u201clead to developments and happenings that could affect all people of the region and especially Kurdish people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tQasemi reiterated that Iran supports the “territorial integrity and democratic process” in Iraq.<\/p>\n
