Qatar signed an agreement to buy 24 Typhoon fighter jets from Britain, the second major defense deal signed by Doha during its lengthy diplomatic dispute with its Persian Gulf neighbors.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tQatar\u2019s Defense Chief Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah and his British counterpart, Michael Fallon, signed a \u201cstatement of intent\u201d for the UK to sell the planes, according to statements released by London and on social media, aljazeera.com reported.
\n\t\u201cThis will be the first major defense contract with Qatar, one of the UK\u2019s strategic partners,\u201d Fallon said. \u201cThis is an important moment in our defense relationship and the basis for even closer defense cooperation between our two countries. We also hope that this will help enhance security within the region across all Persian Gulf allies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Eurofighter Typhoon is a joint project between the British defense group, BAE Systems, France\u2019s Airbus, and Italy\u2019s Finmeccanica.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe cost of the aircraft deal was not released. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBAE agreed in 2014 to supply Saudi Arabia with 72 Typhoon jets in a deal worth $6 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe British ambassador to Qatar, Ajay Sharma, said on\u00a0Twitter\u00a0the deal is a \u201cmajor step\u201d in defense relations between the countries. The development was also confirmed by the official Qatar News Agency on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn June this year, it was announced that Qatar\u00a0agreed to buy F-15 jets\u00a0from the US in a $12 billion deal. And in 2016, Qatar agreed to buy 24 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France in a deal worth a reported $8 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe weapon sales come after\u00a0Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt cut ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of backing “extremism” and fostering ties with Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tQatar has repeatedly denied the charges, claiming the dispute is an attack on its sovereignty.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe crisis has put the region on edge and prompted Turkey to send troops to Doha in a sign of support.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile both sides in the dispute have ruled out the use of force, some ordinary Qataris say they worry about the possibility of military action.<\/p>\n

\n\tKuwait’s Emir\u00a0Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the main mediator in the Persian Gulf dispute, said earlier this month\u00a0military action has been \u201cstopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a joint statement, the blockading nations expressed regret about the Kuwaiti emir\u2019s comments.\u00a0<\/p>\n
