Russia has reportedly rejected an Israeli demand to create a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d in Syria where forces allied to the Syrian government would be prohibited from entering.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Israeli daily Haaretz said in a report on Friday that Russia had rejected an Israeli demand to establish a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d in Syria stretching 60 to 80 kilometers from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe report said Israel had demanded that Iranian, Hezbollah, and other pro-Damascus forces be prohibited from entering that space, Press TV reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tIran does not have combat forces on the ground in Syria but offers advisory military assistance to the Damascus government. Russia, another Syrian ally, has been conducting an aerial bombardment campaign in Syria.<\/p>\n

\n\tIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month traveled to Russia to discuss with President Vladimir Putin his \u201cconcerns\u201d about Iran\u2019s growing influence in Syria. In the meeting with Putin in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi in late August, Netanyahu accused Iran of trying \u201cto establish a foothold in Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to a Russia Today report back then, Netanyahu was told that Moscow, \u201cwhich views Iran as key to resolving the [Syria] crisis,\u201d would \u201cnote Israeli interests,\u201d in what likely amounted to a diplomatic dismissal of the Israeli claims.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIran is Russia\u2019s strategic ally in the Middle East,\u201d Putin reportedly told Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

\n\tWitnesses present during the meeting say that following Netanyahu’s entreaties to the Russian leader, Putin sighed and told the Israeli premier that his government would be unable to assist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t“Unfortunately, we cannot help you here,\u201d Putin reportedly said.<\/p>\n

\n\tRussia and Iran have been in close coordination to assist the Syrian government\u2019s anti-terror fight.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Haaretz report came just before Russia, Iran, and Turkey, which together act as guarantor states in peace talks for Syria, agreed on the details of a \u201cde-escalation zone\u201d in the Arab country\u2019s western Idlib Province during resolution talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe three countries first agreed to set up four \u201cde-escalation zones\u201d in Syria in May. They had already worked out the details of three of the zones.
