Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says Kurdish authorities are \u2018playing with fire\u2019 by planning to hold a referendum on the independence of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
\n

\n\t\u201cA sincere and brotherly call to the leaders in Kurdistan: The decision of referendum is a dangerous one, presstv.ir wrote.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI consider it playing with fire. This decision poses the biggest danger to our citizens in Kurdistan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe plebiscite is scheduled for September 25 to gauge support for the possible secession of Iraq\u2019s Kurdistan region.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Friday, Iraqi Kurdish lawmakers approved holding the secession vote in the face of fierce opposition from the central government in Baghdad, the United Nations and the US.<\/p>\n

\n\tRegional powers like Iran and Turkey have also expressed concerns about the planned referendum by the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), arguing that it could create further instability in the region.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbadi described the upcoming Kurdish vote as \u2018unconstitutional\u2019 and \u2018illegal,\u2019 noting that Baghdad was resorting to all legal processes it has at its disposal in response to the referendum.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you challenge the constitution and if you challenge the borders of Iraq and the borders of the region, then … this is a public invitation to the countries in the region to violate Iraqi borders as well [which] would be a very dangerous escalation,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked whether the use of force was on the table, the Iraqi premier stressed that if the Iraqi population is “threatened by the use of force outside the law, then we will intervene militarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Kurdish vote, he said, jeopardizes gains achieved by the Iraqi Kurds under a self-rule government and opens “the gate for regional intervention in the KRG. Not in the rest of Iraq, but in the KRG.”<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked whether he would ever accept an independent Kurdistan, Abadi said it was a \u201cconstitutional matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt’s not up to me, there is a constitution. \u2026 I don’t have legal authority to accept this referendum. \u2026 If they (the Kurds) want to go down that road, they should work toward amending the constitution,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this week, the Iraqi parliament voted to reject the Kurdish plebiscite, requiring Baghdad to \u201ctake all steps to protect the unity of Iraq and open a serious dialog\u201d with Kurdish leaders.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditionally, the White House called for the Iraqi Kurdish region to abandon the referendum \u201cand enter into serious and sustained dialog with Baghdad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe UN also urged KRG head Masoud Barzani to drop plans for the secession vote and enter talks with Baghdad aimed at reaching a deal within three years.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe KRG has long been embroiled in disputes with the Iraqi federal government over budget payments, oil exports and control of ethnically-divided areas.<\/p>\n

\n\tBarzani told a rally for secession in the city of Dohuk on Friday that the Iraqi Kurdistan did “not take legitimacy from anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe contentious vote comes at a time when Iraq is still grappling with the insecurity caused by the Daesh terrorist group.<\/p>\n
