\n\t\t\tArmy Colonel Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, said in a statement on Monday that the US-backed forces had cleared the Great Mosque of Raqqah, the oldest mosque of the city.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe statement also described the advance as \u201ca milestone\u201d in the Raqqah battle.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cThe SDF have made consistent incremental gains in the urban terrain of the city, fighting block by block,\u201d noted Dillon.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe SDF said last week said it had captured the final districts in Raqqah\u2019s old city from the Daesh terrorist group.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe walled old city lies in the heart of Raqqah, but Daesh terrorists still control districts in the west of the city.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe SDF says it holds 65 percent of Raqqa in total.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSDF fighters have waged fierce battles with slow progress against Daesh in Raqqah\u2019s old city since early July. The SDF pushed into the city in June after fighting for months to encircle it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThousands of people have fled Raqqah in recent months, and the\u00a0United Nations Office\u00a0for the Coordination of\u00a0Humanitarian\u00a0Affairs\u00a0believes about 160,000 people still remain in the city.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe city of Raqqah, which lies on the northern bank of the Euphrates River, was overrun by Daesh in March 2013, and was proclaimed the center for most of the Takfiris\u2019 administrative and control tasks the following year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe SDF, made up of an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters, is supported by the US-led coalition with artillery and airstrikes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn the past few months, Daesh has suffered multiple defeats across Syria, notably in the city of Raqqah. It has also been heavily battered in neighboring Iraq, particularly by losing its main Iraqi base of Mosul in July.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSyria has been fighting different foreign-sponsored militant and terrorist groups since March 2011. The Damascus government has repeatedly blamed certain countries for the spread of the devastating militancy.<\/p>\n
