{"id":698,"date":"2017-09-04T17:10:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-04T17:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/?p=698"},"modified":"2017-09-04T20:54:22","modified_gmt":"2017-09-04T20:54:22","slug":"turkey-slams-german-populism-after-merkels-remarks-on-eu-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/turkey-slams-german-populism-after-merkels-remarks-on-eu-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey slams German &#8216;populism&#8217; after Merkel&#8217;s remarks on EU talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"box-sizing: border-box; width: 564.984px;\" readability=\"110\">\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\t&#8220;Attacking Turkey and Erdogan and ignoring Germany&#8217;s and Europe&#8217;s fundamental and urgent problems are a reflection of a lack of vision,&#8221; Ibrahim Kalin wrote on his Twitter account on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tKalin added that the move was a \u201csurrender to populism and marginalization\/hostility (which) only fuels discrimination and racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\t\u201cWe hope that the problematic atmosphere that made Turkish-German relations the victim of this narrow political horizon will end,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkey has been trying to become an EU member since the 1960s. Formal EU accession talks began in 2005, but the process has been plagued by problems. The EU has opened 16 out of the 35 chapters required for Turkey to join the 28-nation bloc, but only one of them has so far been concluded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tThe Turkish presidential spokesperson made the comments a day after Merkel, in a TV debate ahead of German\u2019s federal elections on September 24, agreed with her main rival, Social Democrat Martin Schulz, saying it was &#8220;clear that Turkey should not become a member of the European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tMerkel added that she would talk to other EU leaders about ending Ankara\u2019s stalled accession process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tThe German chancellor, however, stressed that she had \u201cno intention of ending diplomatic relations with Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: center;\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; display: inline-block; margin: 20px 0px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"313\" src=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ab70babf-2807-4099-84c1-4f6b1649c276.jpg\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px none; vertical-align: middle; display: block; width: 564.984px; height: auto;\" width=\"555\"\/><figcaption style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 12px; padding: 10px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); background: rgb(240, 240, 240);\">This picture made available by German TV broadcaster RTL shows German Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) and her election rival, Martin Schulz, during a debate at a television studio in Berlin, on September 3, 2017. (Via AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek reacted on Twitter, saying the &#8220;EU never had a credible commitment to let Turkey in,&#8221; and that &#8220;Merkel isn&#8217;t only shooting herself in the foot but also jeopardizing the future of Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkey\u2019s European Union Affairs Minister Omer Celik also censured the remarks by the German chancellor, saying any talk of ending his country&#8217;s negotiations for joining the union bloc amounted to an &#8220;attack on Europe&#8217;s founding principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\t&#8220;They are building a Berlin wall with bricks of populism,&#8221; Celik said, adding that Turkey would &#8220;keep going with its head held high as a European country and a European democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tMeanwhile, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said on Monday that Turkey was moving away from Europe and the actions of Turkish authorities were making it &#8220;impossible&#8221; for the country to join the 28-member bloc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tSchinas stressed, however, that any decision on whether to formally stop the long-stalled membership process would be up to the EU member states not the Brussels executive.<\/p>\n<div style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: center;\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; display: inline-block; margin: 20px 0px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"313\" src=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/0c566323-b320-439a-8302-1ea804d8a223.jpg\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px none; vertical-align: middle; display: block; width: 564.984px; height: auto;\" width=\"555\"\/><figcaption style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 12px; padding: 10px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); background: rgb(240, 240, 240);\">People, mainly Turkish soldiers, accused of trying to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the 2016 coup attempt, are escorted by security forces towards the courthouse in Mugla, western Turkey, on February 20, 2017.
