\n\t\t\tSyria\u2019s state-run television reported on Monday that army and allied forces had come to within three kilometers of Dayr al-Zawr, located 450\u00a0kilometers (280\u00a0miles) northeast of the capital\u00a0Damascus\u00a0on the shores of the\u00a0Euphrates River.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe development came after the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that Syrian troops, supported by Russian military aircraft, had\u00a0advanced\u00a0on several fronts towards Dayr al-Zawr, and arrived at the Brigade 137 base on the western edge of the city overnight.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Britain-based monitoring group noted that Syrian troops are now battling to break the Daesh siege of the base.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cThere have been multiple collapses of the Daesh line in the western part of Dayr al-Zawr Province, allowing the army to move quickly and arrive 10 kilometers from the besieged forces,\u201d an unnamed military source said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cThe siege on the government troops will be broken within hours,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLater in the day, Syrian state media reported the army had regained full control over the town of Kabajeb southwest of Dayr al-Zawr.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeanwhile, Provincial governor Mohamed Ibrahim Samra has told Syria\u2019s official news agency SANA that besieged residents are celebrating as army forces and their allies advance.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cYesterday Deir al-Zor city saw celebrations and rejoicing among all segments of society ahead of the expected victory with the advance of the Syrian Arab Army to the outskirts of the besieged city,” he said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDaesh militants overran large parts of Dayr al-Zawr Province, including its many oilfields, in mid-2014 as it seized areas in Syria and neighboring Iraq.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBy early 2015, the Takfiri terrorists were in control of parts of Dayr al-Zawr city, and besieged the remaining parts of it under government control.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt is estimated that 100,000 people remain in government-held parts of the city.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates more than 10,000 people may live in Daesh-held parts of the city.<\/p>\n
