In an interview with ILNA news agency, Syed Mohammad Akbar Agha, who \nis the current leader of Rah-e-Nejat (High Council of Salvation), said \n\u201cWe see clearly that wherever there is bombing, the Americans are there \nand they have the right to release Taliban prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States and the Taliban agreed to the release of up to five\n thousand Taliban prisoners in exchange for up to one thousand Afghan \nsecurity forces, but the Afghan government said it had not committed to \nsuch a swap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about why the peace effort quickly hit an obstacle, with Afghan\n President Ashraf Ghani refusing to implement a part of the accord, he \nconfirmed \u201cPrisoners will be released because US orders release of \nthem,\u201d adding that \u201cThe government does not want peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by telephone with chief Taliban \nnegotiator Mullah Baradar Akhund on Tuesday, the first known \nconversation between a U.S. leader and a top Taliban official, as a \ndispute over a prisoner release threatened a U.S.-led effort to bring \npeace to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments come as the Taliban have resumed hostilities in \nAfghanistan, carrying out 33 attacks in the past day, according to the \nInterior Ministry. Marwa Amini, a deputy spokeswoman for the ministry, \nsaid there were attacks in 16 provinces, targeting civilians and \nsecurity forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answering to question why Iran was not present at the signing \nceremony, Ex-Taliban official added \u201cThe reason for the absence of an \nIranian representative was that the Americans did not have a good \nrelationship with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We, like all the Afghans, want peace in this country. The Taliban \nare now sitting down to talk, which means they are ready for peace as \nwell,” Agha told ILNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, the people of Afghanistan are in dire need of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to intra-Afghan negotiations with the Taliban, a former \nTaliban official told \u201cThe Taliban had previously said that if the \ngovernment is referred to as the “Government of Afghanistan”, we would \nnot negotiate, and if it was named “Kabul Bureau”, we would negotiate \nwith them as an office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWashington has no right to interfere in intra-Afghan negotiations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agha, former leader of Taliban’s Jaish-e-Muslimeen wing, fought \nagainst the Afghan forces after the US toppled the Taliban government in\n 2001. His council is currently seen making efforts to restore peace in \nAfghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump in September scotched a first bid to finalize a U.S.-Taliban \ntroop withdrawal deal, citing a U.S. soldier\u2019s death in a Taliban \nattack.
