A judge denied the request, and \nthe bank is appealing that ruling. A three-judge panel of the Second \nCircuit Court of Appeals will weigh the request on an expedited basis, \nBloomberg reported.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tProsecutors have deemed the bank a fugitive from justice, asking a \njudge to hold it in contempt and impose fines until it begins answering \nthe charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tHalkbank, which is owned by the Turkish government, was charged in \nOctober with helping Iran access billions of dollars in oil revenue that\n had been frozen in its accounts under US sanctions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tA senior bank executive was previously convicted in the case, and a \nmoney launderer pleaded guilty to charges of orchestrating the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tThe case has become a persistent thorn in the side of Turkish President\n Recep Erdogan, who has pressed President Donald Trump to intervene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tThe charges were brought at the height of tensions between Washington and Ankara over Turkey\u2019s military offensive in Syria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tEarlier in January,&nbsp; prosecutors in Manhattan federal court had said \nHalkbank should be fined an initial $1 million a day for contempt of \ncourt, and which could double each week to counter the bank\u2019s \n\u201cobstinacy\u201d in refusing to defend itself in court, news wires reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tSuch a penalty \u201cis an appropriate and necessary sanction to apply a \nsufficient coercive pressure to cause the defendant to cease its \ncontempt and appear in this matter,\u201d prosecutors claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tUS prosecutors announced fraud and money laundering charges in the case\n on Oct. 15, claiming Halkbank and its executives used money servicers \nand front companies in Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to \nevade sanctions.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/node\/102027\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>.<\/em><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Turkey Bank Wins Reprieve in US Prosecution Over Iran Sanctions&amp;url=https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/node\/102027&amp;via=fintribune\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>.<\/em><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/shareArticle?url=https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/node\/102027\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>.<\/em><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/telegram.me\/share\/url?url=https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/node\/102027&amp;text=Turkey Bank Wins Reprieve in US Prosecution Over Iran Sanctions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>.<\/em><\/a>\n\n\n\n\nhttps:\/\/financialtribune.com\/node\/102027\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Afederal appeals court granted a temporary halt in the US prosecution of Turkish lender Halkbank over sanctions violation charges while it weighs other requests by the bank.
