{"id":2321,"date":"2017-12-18T11:26:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T12:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/envoy-palestinians-may-seek-un-assembly-support-if-us-vetoes-resolution\/"},"modified":"2017-12-18T11:26:34","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T12:26:34","slug":"envoy-palestinians-may-seek-un-assembly-support-if-us-vetoes-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/envoy-palestinians-may-seek-un-assembly-support-if-us-vetoes-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Envoy: Palestinians may seek UN Assembly support if US vetoes resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"lide\">The Palestinian leadership may turn to the UN General Assembly if Washington vetoes a draft UN Security Council resolution to reaffirm Beit-ul-Moqaddas\u2019 status as unresolved, after President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to recognize it as Israel\u2019s capital.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"94\">\n<p>\n\tThe Palestinian United Nations envoy raised this option in remarks published in the Saudi daily Arab News on Monday, ahead of a Security Council vote on an Egyptian-drafted resolution on Beit-ul-Moqaddas\u2019 status which the United States is expected to veto, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe draft says, \u201cAny decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem (Beit-ul-Moqaddas) have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTrump\u2019s Dec. 6 decision to recognize Beit-ul-Moqaddas as Israel\u2019s capital and to move the US Embassy to the city has provoked widespread anger and protests among Palestinians as well as broad international criticism, including from top US allies.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIsrael captured East Beit-ul-Moqaddas in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in a move never recognized internationally. Palestinians want East Beit-ul-Moqaddas as the capital of a future state they seek in territory Israel captured a half century ago.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tArab News quoted Ambassador Riyad Mansour as saying that the Palestinians and Egyptians have worked closely with Security Council members while drafting the resolution to ensure that it gets overwhelming support.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe Europeans in particular asked us to avoid terms like \u2018denounce\u2019 and \u2018condemn,\u2019 and not to mention the US by name,\u201d it quoted Mansour as saying. \u201cWe acceded to their request but kept the active clauses rejecting all changes to Beit-ul-Moqaddas and the reaffirmation of previous decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIsrael has long accused the United Nations of bias against it in its conflict with the Palestinians and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump\u2019s move again on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Palestinians have the option of invoking a rarely-used article of the UN Charter that calls for parties to a dispute not to cast a veto, Arab News said. But, it said, they are more likely to take the issue to the General Assembly under Resolution 377A, known as the \u201cUniting for Peace\u201d resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tResolution 377A was passed in 1950 and used to authorize the deployment of US troops to fight in the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMansour said Palestinians resorted to the \u201cUniting for Peace\u201d resolution in the 1990s after Israel began building a settlement on Jabal Abut Ghnaim, a hilltop on occupied West Bank, south of Beit-ul-Moqaddas, but left that session in suspension.
