Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his country is launching an initiative at the United Nations to annul the recent \u201cdisgraceful\u201d decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Israeli-occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of the Tel Aviv regime.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe, as Turkey, are determined to perform our duties on this issue. We will stand up against those who breach international law. We will work to annul this unlawful decision, first in the Security Council and then in the UN General Assembly, if it is vetoed there,\u201d Erdogan addressed a rally in the central province of Konya via teleconference on Friday.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe stated that Washington had violated the 1980 UN Security Council decision on Jerusalem al-Quds, stressing that \u201cno country was above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tErdogan went on to say that Muslims \u201cwould never give in to such double standards and injustice,\u201d adding that Ankara was also launching initiatives to make other countries recognize the Palestinian state.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRight now, 137 countries in the world recognize the Palestinian state. God willing, this number will further increase with our efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Turkish president also made a reference to Wednesday’s summit of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which declared occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds the capital of Palestine and urged the world to recognize the state of Palestine.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDuring the summit, we declared the US statement on Jerusalem al-Quds as null, void and illegal. We also recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as the occupied capital of the Palestinian state. Right now, Jerusalem al-Quds is the capital of Palestine in the presence of all OIC member countries. We have invited all countries, primarily European, to recognize Palestine and accept Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel\u2019s capital and relocate the US embassy in the occupied lands from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds on December 6.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dramatic shift in Washington\u2019s Jerusalem al-Quds policy triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco\u00a0and other Muslim countries.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday, violent clashes erupted outside the US embassy in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut during a protest against the US president\u2019s decision. Demonstrators burnt tires as well as the US and Israeli flags as they pushed to break through a barbed wire erected by security forces around the embassy complex.<\/p>\n

\n\tSecurity forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the angry protesters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tJerusalem al-Quds remains at the core of the Israeli\u2013Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians hoping that the eastern part of the city would eventually serve as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
