More than 130 Bahraini scholars have strongly condemned the recent visit by an inter-faith group of residents from the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom to the occupied Palestinian lands, describing it as \u201cunjustified\u201d especially in the wake of US President Donald Trump\u2019s recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe scholars, in a statement released on Sunday, decried any attempts by the ruling Al Khalifah regime aimed at normalization of diplomatic relations with \u201cthe usurper Zionist regime (of Israel).\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe feel a strong sense of religious responsibility to categorically reject any form of normalization of ties with the Zionist entity. We strongly condemn such a move,\u201d the statement pointed out.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Bahrain’s\u00a0dissolved main opposition bloc, the\u00a0al-Wefaq\u00a0National Islamic Society,\u00a0has censured any bid by the Manama regime to establish ties with Israel.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe group emphasized that any such effort is a betrayal of the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n

\n\tA Bahraini civil society group, which calls itself “This is Bahrain”, has defended sending a delegation to Israel in a statement published by Bahrain\u2019s state news agency BNA.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe group said the visit was a private initiative to \u201cIsrael and occupied Jerusalem al-Quds,\u201d and had the backing of Bahraini monarch King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifah.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe controversial visit has prompted the hashtag #Bahrain_resists_normalisation, in which twitter users declaring their opposition to what some called an \u201cact of treason\u201d against Palestinians and Bahrainis.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe trip came as US President Donald Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel\u2019s capital and relocate the US embassy in the occupied lands from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds on December 6.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dramatic shift in Washington\u2019s Jerusalem al-Quds policy triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and other Muslim countries.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday, violent clashes erupted outside the US Embassy in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut during a protest against US president\u2019s decision to officially recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

\n\tDemonstrators burnt tires as well as the US and Israeli flags as they pushed to break through a barbed wire erected by security forces around the embassy complex.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSecurity forces fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the angry protesters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t\tJerusalem al-Quds remains at the core of the Israeli\u2013Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians hoping that the eastern part of the city would eventually serve as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
