{"id":2128,"date":"2017-12-08T23:44:13","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T00:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/eu-coal-fired-plants-to-be-in-the-red-by-2030\/"},"modified":"2017-12-08T23:44:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T00:44:13","slug":"eu-coal-fired-plants-to-be-in-the-red-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/eu-coal-fired-plants-to-be-in-the-red-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Coal-Fired Plants to Be in the Red by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p> \tEuropean power companies could save billions of dollars by stepping up the closure of coal-fired power plants, as nearly all of them will be loss-making in Europe by 2030, think-tank Carbon Tracker Initiative says.<br \/> \tCoal power should be phased out in the European Union by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement\u2019s target to limit the rise in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius, Reuters reported.<br \/> \tHowever, the bloc is still reliant on coal-fired power and only 27% of coal-fired power plants in the EU plan to close before 2030, Carbon Tracker said in a report released on Friday, basing its estimate on company reports and countries\u2019 phase-out policies.<br \/> \tAccording to the report, 54% of European coal-fired power plants are currently cashflow negative and this could increase to 97% by 2030 due to rising carbon prices and stricter air quality rules, Carbon Tracker said, based on modeling from commodity price forecasts, asset operating costs, gross profitability and government policies.<br \/> \t\u201cSince the majority of coal units are loss-making by 2030, the EU could avoid \u20ac22 billion in losses by phasing out coal power in line with the Paris Agreement,\u201d Carbon Tracker said.<br \/> \tGermany-based units could save \u20ac9 billion by phasing out coal, while Poland could save \u20ac3 billion. Utilities that have the most to gain from phasing out coal are Germany\u2019s RWE and Uniper, which could save \u20ac3 billion and \u20ac1.7 billion, respectively, according to Carbon Tracker. Coal-fired power currently makes up 26% of total EU power generation.<br \/> \tCarbon Tracker, however, says coal power\u2019s operating costs could be higher than onshore wind by 2024 and solar photovoltaic by 2027, while energy storage technologies and power reduction firms increasingly provide backup power. Analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis earlier this year said more than 100 separate power plants\u2014representing a third of Europe\u2019s large-scale coal-fired power plant capacity\u2014face costly air quality upgrades or closure as a result of the pollutant limits.<br \/> \tMany coal plant operators, however, say coal will be needed for decades to come to provide stable energy supplies, as renewable energy is intermittent.<\/p>\n<p> \t\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>madaresharghi European power companies could save billions of dollars by stepping up the closure of coal-fired power plants, as nearly all of them will be loss-making in Europe by 2030, think-tank Carbon Tracker Initiative says.
