Iraq\u2019s top court on Monday declared the Kurdish north\u2019s secession referendum in September to be unconstitutional, firing a new salvo in the political crisis with the semi-autonomous region.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
\n

\n\tThe legal move marked the latest stage in the dispute between Baghdad and the Kurdish regional capital, Erbil, sparked by the referendum, which resulted in a resounding \u2018yes\u2019 vote for secession in the Kurdish area, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

\n\tA statement said the Supreme Court \u201crendered a decision declaring unconstitutional the referendum held on September 25 in Iraqi Kurdistan… cancelling all the consequences and results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLast week, as the deadline announced by the court for its decision on the constitutionality of the referendum approached, the Kurdistan government said it \u201crespected\u201d the decisions taken by Iraq\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt also said it respected a previous decision on Article 1 in the Constitution, insisting on Iraqi unity, which could be a basis for dialogue.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Monday, the court again cited this article in its ruling, saying that the holding of the Kurdish secession referendum \u201ccontradicts and contravenes it,\u201d spokesman Ayas al-Samuk said in the statement.<\/p>\n

\n\tParliament in Baghdad is currently reviewing the federal budget for the coming year, including the allocation for the Kurdish region.<\/p>\n

\n\tKurdish premier, Nechirvan Barzani, at a press conference in Erbil, denounced the court\u2019s \u201cunilateral\u201d decision taken without consulting representatives of the semi-autonomous region.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also said he was \u201cready for dialogue\u201d with Baghdad.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier, Abdel Salam Barwari, a former deputy of former Kurdish leader Massud Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party, also rejected it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was a predictable decision given this court\u2019s past and the fact that it has now become a political tool,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Baghdad, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi hailed the court\u2019s decision, saying his government \u201crejected this referendum and refused to have anything to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
