\n\t\t\tErdogan said in a televised speech on Friday that he had ordered 40\u00a0troops to be withdrawn from the exercise after his name and that of the country\u2019s founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, were placed on a \u201ctable\u201d listing \u201cenemies\u201d at the NATO drill.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTurkey’s leader said the incident, which took place on Thursday, was considered an insult and so he had instructed the\u00a0troops, who were to take part in the NATO exercise, to pull out.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn\u00a0response, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg apologized for the incident. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI have been informed about the offense caused in a recently concluded exercise at NATO\u2019s Joint Warfare Center in Stavanger, Norway,” he said. “I apologize for the offense that has been caused.”\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\t\t\tStoltenberg said the incident\u00a0was the result of an individual’s action and did not reflect the NATO policies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cThe individual in question was immediately removed from the exercise by the Joint Warfare Center, and an investigation is underway,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNTV private broadcaster reported on Friday that NATO had\u00a0fired the military officer who used pictures of Erdogan and Ataturk to show \u201cenemies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTurkey, which has been a NATO member since 1952, is considered a key ally of the West, particularly the United States.<\/p>\n
