\n\t\t\tOn Thursday,\u00a0Bahrain’s Supreme Court of Appeal\u00a0upheld the sentences against the defendants on charges of forming \u201cunlawful\u201d gatherings of more than five people, setting\u00a0tires\u00a0alight along\u00a0streets and hurling petrol bombs at armored police vehicles in the\u00a0village of Buri, located about 13\u00a0kilometers\u00a0southwest of the capital,\u00a0Manama-based Arabic-language\u00a0al-Watan\u00a0daily newspaper reported.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe report came as a Bahrain court had earlier sentenced the convicts along with three others to prison terms ranging from three to seven years over their alleged involvement in acts of violence.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSix of them were given seven-year jail sentences, while the seventh was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay 500 dinars ($1,323) for the damage caused to public and private properties.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThey are demanding that the Al Khalifah dynasty relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tManama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent.\u00a0On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain\u00a0in its crackdown.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tScores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries or got arrested as a result of the Al Khalifah regime\u2019s crackdown.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn March 5 2017, Bahrain\u2019s\u00a0parliament\u00a0approved the trial of civilians at military tribunals in a measure blasted by human rights campaigners as being tantamount to imposition of an undeclared martial law countrywide. Bahraini monarch King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifah ratified the constitutional amendment on April 3.<\/p>\n
