Sixteen people sustained injuries in the brawl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkish officials said at the time that members of the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) and those affiliated to a movement led by Pennsylvania-based opposition cleric Fethullah Gulen\u00a0were united in the protest against Erdogan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tThe Ankara government accuses Gulen of having masterminded the July 2016 coup attempt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tThe Turkish Foreign Ministry stated then that the failure by US authorities to effectively take precautions was the main cause of the incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tElsewhere in his remarks, Erdogan also criticized US President Donald Trump&#8217;s policy regarding Muslims, saying Turkey never closed its doors to people who thought differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\t\u201cMuslims in America are facing expulsion so it means there is a problem in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tRelations between Ankara and Washington have been seriously strained in recent months, and led to the suspension of mutual visa services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tOn October 4, Turkish authorities arrested a US Consulate General staffer in Istanbul on charges of contacts with members of Gulen\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkey\u2019s official Anadolu news agency reported that the man worked as a contact officer at the Consulate General, and made contacts with former police chiefs Yakup Saygil\u0131, Nazmi Ardi\u00e7, Mahir \u00c7akall\u0131 and Mehmet Akif \u00dcner, all linked to Gulen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tThe US Embassy in Ankara later said it was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by the arrest of the consulate staffer, claiming that the charges against him were \u201cbaseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tApart from the allegation of the coup architect, Gulen is accused of being behind a long-running campaign to topple the government via infiltrating the country\u2019s institutions, particularly the army, police and\u00a0the judiciary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tAdditionally, the Ankara government has outlawed Gulen\u2019s movement, branding it as\u00a0the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tGulen has denounced the \u201cdespicable putsch\u201d and reiterated that he had no role in it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTurkey has frequently called on the US to extradite Gulen, but the demands have not been taken heed of.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\tTens of thousands of people have been arrested in Turkey on suspicion\u00a0of having links to Gulen and the failed coup.
