\n\t\t\tThe KRG\u2019s Independent High Electoral Commission announced on Wednesday that it had \u201copted to suspend temporarily preparations for the November polls due to the current situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe commission said it was up to the regional parliament to set a new date for elections, adding that it had not received any nominations for the presidential poll by the deadline.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe\u00a0KRG\u2019s elections\u00a0commission had set October 3 as the\u00a0last day\u00a0to\u00a0nominate\u00a0candidates for the presidential election\u00a0in the\u00a0Kurdistan\u00a0region.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMohammad Tawfiq Rahim, the coordinator of diplomatic relations in the Movement for Change and a prominent rival of Kurdish President Massoud Barzani, was the only candidate registered to run, but the commission ruled he had missed the deadline.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBarzani has repeatedly said he will not stand for another term.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeanwhile, a senior leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has warned that the Kurdistan region may split, leading to a “civil war” that would prompt regional and international powers to intervene.<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is a grave danger of the Kurdistan region splitting into two administrations. This is expected to cause civil war and regional and international interference,\u201d Mala Bakhtiyar, the executive head of the PUK politburo office, warned in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\t\t\tThe referendum on secession of the Kurdistan region was held on September 25 despite strong opposition from the central government in Baghdad, the international community, and Iraq’s neighboring countries, especially Turkey and Iran.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFollowing the vote, Baghdad imposed a ban on direct international flights to the Kurdish region and called for a halt to its independent crude oil sales.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn October 12, an Iraqi government spokesman said Baghdad had set a series of conditions that the KRG\u00a0needed to meet before any talks on the resolution of the referendum crisis could start.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\u201cThe KRG must first commit to Iraq’s unity. The local authorities in the [Kurdistan] region\u2026 must accept the sovereign authority of the federal government on\u2026 oil exports, [as well as] security and border protection, including land and air entry points,\u201d the unnamed Iraqi official added.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIraqi Prime Minister\u00a0Haider al-Abadi has already demanded the annulment of\u00a0the referendum.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDuring a recent press conference in\u00a0Paris, Abadi\u00a0said his government did not seek\u00a0confrontation with Iraqi Kurds, but reiterated Baghdad\u2019s position that the vote was illegal\u00a0and that problems should be solved within the framework of Iraq\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n
