{"id":1062,"date":"2017-10-18T15:02:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T15:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/eu-demands-israel-reconsider-illegal-settler-units-plan-in-west-bank\/"},"modified":"2017-10-18T15:02:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T15:02:39","slug":"eu-demands-israel-reconsider-illegal-settler-units-plan-in-west-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/eu-demands-israel-reconsider-illegal-settler-units-plan-in-west-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"EU demands Israel \u2018reconsider illegal\u2019 settler units plan in West Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"lide\">The EU on Wednesday demanded Israel reconsider plans for nearly 1,300 settler units in the occupied West Bank, saying they were \u201cillegal under international law\u201d and undermined the prospects for peace.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"86\">\n<p>\n\tIsrael on Tuesday advanced plans for 1,292 new homes, with approval from a committee overseeing settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, according to the Peace Now watchdog, AFP reported.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe move came after Tel Avive pledged a major boost in settlement home approvals this year, with US President Donald Trump much less critical of such plans than his predecessor Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut the EU condemned the step, restating its position that settlement activity was &#8220;illegal under international law&#8221; and damaged &#8220;the viability of the two-state solution and the prospect for a lasting peace&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&#8220;The European Union has requested clarifications from Israeli authorities and conveyed the expectation that they reconsider these decisions, which are detrimental to ongoing efforts towards meaningful peace talks,&#8221; an EU statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe bloc voiced particular concern about proposals to build settler homes in the flashpoint West Bank city of Al-Khalil for the first time since 2002 and about the start of preparatory groundwork in the East Beit-ul-Moqaddas area of Givat HaMatos.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tConstruction in Givat Hamatos would &#8220;severely jeopardize the contiguity and viability of a future Palestinian state&#8221;, the EU said, adding that it would continue work with international and regional partners to try to restart dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTrump is seeking to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which collapsed in 2014 following the failure of an earlier US-led initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSettlement building in East Beit-ul-Moqaddas and the West Bank, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War, is seen as a major obstacle to peace as the homes are built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSettlement building in the occupied West Bank and East Beit-ul-Moqaddas is considered illegal under international law.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAbout 400,000 Israelis live in roughly 150 settlements in the West Bank, and an additional 200,000 Israelis live in Beit-ul-Moqaddas, which Palestinians want to become the capital of a future state.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIsrael approves such projects every few months but until recently focused on approving buildings in the major settlement blocs, which it hopes to keep as part of any eventual peace settlement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>madaresharghi The EU on Wednesday demanded Israel reconsider plans for nearly 1,300 settler units in the occupied West Bank, saying they were \u201cillegal under international law\u201d and undermined the prospects for peace.
