{"id":1056,"date":"2017-10-17T19:20:11","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T19:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/iraqi-forces-reestablish-security-in-kirkuk-after-pushing-out-kurds\/"},"modified":"2017-10-17T19:20:11","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T19:20:11","slug":"iraqi-forces-reestablish-security-in-kirkuk-after-pushing-out-kurds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/iraqi-forces-reestablish-security-in-kirkuk-after-pushing-out-kurds\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraqi forces reestablish security in Kirkuk after pushing out Kurds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"lide\">Thousands of civilians have returned to the Iraqi city of Kirkuk after fleeing as government forces pushed Kurdish militants out of the oil-rich city and established security.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"156\">\n<p>\n\tResidents headed back along a main highway to the city&#8217;s east on Tuesday with their children and belongings packed in their cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPolice called on the residents, who had fled in their thousands for fear of a potential armed confrontation, to return, giving assurances that the situation is stable.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe city is now under a night-time curfew.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn a televised address, Iraqi President\u00a0Fuad Masum said\u00a0troops had no choice but to take over the administration of Kirkuk after Kurdish authorities held a referendum for independence last month.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMasum, himself a Kurd, said the independence vote &#8220;provoked dangerous disputes&#8221; between Baghdad and Irbil, the capital of Iraq&#8217;s Kurdish autonomous region.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPrime Minister Haider al-Abadi also said the Kurdish referendum &#8220;is finished and has become a thing of the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAddressing a news conference in Baghdad, Abadi called for dialog with Kurdish authorities to resolve the dispute &#8220;under the Constitution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Government buildings, oil fields retaken<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tIraq\u2019s Alforat news agency also said army forces were now in control of all of the city\u2019s government buildings, state-owned North Oil and North Gas companies, the Kirkuk International Airport, and K-1 Airbase, presstv.ir reported.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCited by Reuters, an Iraqi army officer said government forces had also taken control of all oilfields operated by the North Oil Company in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGovernment troops have also reopened the highway linking the Kirkuk City and the capital Baghdad, Iraq\u2019s al-Sumariyah television network reported.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKurdish forces have been holding parts of Iraqi territory since 2014, when Daesh began an offensive across Iraq and the Kurds began fighting it and overrunning territory in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Baghdad government has long insisted that the Kurds pull out of the territories they had overrun. But the Kurdish militants have refused. Ever since a controversial referendum on secession in Iraqi Kurdistan on September 25, the Iraqi government has lost patience, sending security forces to retake Kurdish-held areas.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"313\" src=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/032c147c-898d-4b3a-98ee-f0254cc38c0b.jpg\" width=\"555\"\/><figcaption>Iraqi forces discuss military tactics as they move toward Kurdish Peshmerga positions on the outskirts of the northern city of Kirkuk, on October 15, 2017. (Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\n\tBaghdad also ordered the Kurdistan region to swiftly hand over its border crossings and airports. The region refused and later sent thousands of Peshmerga and other militants to Kirkuk Province, which it has been claiming in its entirety for long.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPrime Minister Haider al-Abadi has ordered that national flags be hoisted on public buildings in all of Kirkuk\u2019s neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCrowds on the streets of Kirkuk\u2019s southern outskirts welcomed army forces as they entered the city.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Peshmerga have called the takeover \u201ca flagrant declaration of war\u201d and vowed that Iraq will pay a \u201cheavy price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Kurds retreat before Iraqi forces start op. near Iran border<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tMeanwhile, Kurdish Peshmerga forces pulled out from the area of Khanaqin, on the border with Iran, as Iraqi forces prepared to take over their positions, security sources said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA small oil field, Khana, is located in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Iraqi forces take control of Sinjar, other towns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tMeanwhile, Iraqi army and Hashd al-Sha\u2019bi forces have taken control of the city of Sinjar in Nineveh Province following a pullout by Kurdish militants.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGovernment forces took control of all of Sinjar on Tuesday after the withdrawal a day earlier of Kurdish Peshmerga militants.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Peshmerga militants also left the towns of Bashiqa and Bahzani in Nineveh.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Kurds clash with police in London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tSeparately, Kurdish separatists have clashed with police in front of Iraq\u2019s Embassy in London.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIraq\u2019s Foreign Ministry reacted by saying that the protesters had engaged in \u201ccriminal\u201d activity and demanding that the UK investigate them.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>\u2018Iran closes Kurdistan border crossing\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tFollowing the referendum, Iraq demanded neighbors Iran and Turkey to close their respective borders with Kurdistan.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIran closed its airspace with Iraqi Kurdistan at the time, and on Monday, Faramarz Akbari, the governor of Qasr-e-Shirin, said Iran had since a day earlier temporarily closed its Parviz Khan Border Crossing in Kermanshah Province, which borders Iraq&#8217;s Kurdistan.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe said it would likely remain closed until Iraqi security forces replace the Kurdish militants on the borders.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis is the first time an Iranian official has confirmed the closure of a land border with Iraq&#8217;s Kurdish region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>madaresharghi Thousands of civilians have returned to the Iraqi city of Kirkuk after fleeing as government forces pushed Kurdish militants out of the oil-rich city and established security.
