{"id":1044,"date":"2017-10-17T05:49:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T05:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/germany-suspends-peshmerga-military-training-in-n-iraq\/"},"modified":"2017-10-17T05:49:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T05:49:22","slug":"germany-suspends-peshmerga-military-training-in-n-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/germany-suspends-peshmerga-military-training-in-n-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany suspends Peshmerga military training in N Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"lide\">Germany has suspended the training of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq amid concerns about growing tensions in Kirkuk, officials confirmed Monday.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"66\">\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe military training activities have been temporarily suspended,&#8221; a German defense ministry spokeswoman told ANADOLU, adding that officials are closely monitoring developments in close coordination with allies in the anti-Daesh coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGermany had been providing military training for Kurdish Peshmerga forces since 2015 to support the fight against Daesh in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs part of the training mission, German armed forces, or Bundeswehr, stationed approximately 150 soldiers in Erbil, the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government\u2019s (KRG) capital in northern Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLast month the German government criticized the KRG\u2019s unilateral move to hold an illegitimate independence referendum and called for dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve their issues.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTensions between Iraq&#8217;s central government and Erbil have steadily mounted since the vote September 25 that was held in Kurdish-controlled areas and in several disputed territories, including the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe poll was strongly opposed by most regional and international actors \u2014 including the US, Turkey and Iran \u2015 that warned it would distract from Iraq\u2019s fight against terrorism and further destabilize the region.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Iraqi army began a wide-ranging operation early Monday aimed at controlling official buildings, military facilities and oil fields in Kirkuk.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKurdish Peshmerga forces reportedly withdrew from the city and its outskirts before the Iraqi army advanced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>madaresharghi Germany has suspended the training of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq amid concerns about growing tensions in Kirkuk, officials confirmed Monday. \u201cThe military training activities have been temporarily suspended,&#8221; a German defense ministry spokeswoman told ANADOLU, adding that officials are closely monitoring developments in close coordination with allies in the anti-Daesh coalition.
