Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has denied an attack plan against the positions of Kurdish Peshmerga forces amid ongoing tensions between the central government in Baghdad and Kurdish authorities over the September 25 referendum on the independence of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region from the rest of the Iraqi territory.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are not going to use our army to fight our people or to make war on our Kurdish citizens or others,\u201d Abadi said in televised comments broadcast on state-run al-Iraqiya television network on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cOur duty is to preserve the unity of our country, to implement the constitution, and to protect citizens and national forces.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe remarks came as an unnamed Kurdish military official said Peshmerga forces had closed the two main roads connecting the Kurdish cities of Erbil and Dohuk with the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, located some 400 kilometers north of the capital Baghdad, for several hours.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe closure was prompted by fears of a possible attack by Iraqi forces on the disputed areas,\u201d held by Kurdish forces but outside the Kurdish region, the official said.<\/p>\n

\n\tKurdish authorities said late on Wednesday they feared Iraqi army forces and pro- government fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units, commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi, were gearing up to launch an assault on the semi-autonomous region.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe’re receiving dangerous messages that Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi forces and federal police are preparing a major attack from the southwest of Kirkuk and north of Mosul against Kurdistan,\u201d the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Security Council said.<\/p>\n

\n\tIraqi security sources said on Thursday that members of the\u00a0Counter-Terrorism Service\u00a0(CTS) and the Interior Ministry’s elite\u00a0rapid response forces had deployed more forces near Peshmerga positions around Rashad village, situated some 65 kilometers southwest of Kirkuk.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) underplayed the fears, expressing confidence that dialogue would resolve the issue.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur mission is clear: we are fighting a single enemy, Daesh,\u201d said the spokesman for the JOC, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll that interests Iraqis … is to liberate our country and beat the terrorist group. We do not forget the role played by the Peshmerga,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\tRasool said Iraqi government forces had previously operated close to Peshmerga lines near the northern city of Tal Afar.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u2018Kurds must back Iraq\u2019s unity before any negotiations\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, an Iraqi government spokesman says Baghdad has a series of conditions that the KRG must meet before any talks on the resolution of the referendum crisis could start.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe KRG must first commit to Iraq’s unity. The local authorities in the [Kurdistan] region \u2026 must accept the sovereign authority of the federal government on \u2026 oil exports, security and border protection, including land and air entry points,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe senior Iraqi official added, \u201cThese are the basis for any dialogue requested by the local government of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe remarks came in response to an offer for dialogue made on Wednesday overnight by Kurdish authorities.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkey to close border gates with northern Iraq<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tSeparately, a Turkish government spokesman says his country will gradually close border gates with Iraq\u2019s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in coordination with the central Iraqi government and neighboring Iran.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is expected to visit Baghdad on Sunday to meet with his Iraqi counterpart.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Iraqi prime minister\u00a0has already demanded the annulment of\u00a0the Kurdish independence referendum results.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent press conference in\u00a0Paris, Abadi\u00a0said his government did not seek\u00a0confrontation with Iraqi Kurds\u00a0but reiterated Baghdad\u2019s position that the referendum was illegal, and that problems should be solved within the framework of Iraq\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
