{"id":1014,"date":"2017-10-11T16:59:09","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T16:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madaresharghi.com\/iraqi-court-issues-arrest-warrants-for-kurdish-independence-vote-organizers\/"},"modified":"2017-10-11T16:59:09","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T16:59:09","slug":"iraqi-court-issues-arrest-warrants-for-kurdish-independence-vote-organizers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madaresharghi.ir\/en\/iraqi-court-issues-arrest-warrants-for-kurdish-independence-vote-organizers\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraqi court issues arrest warrants for Kurdish independence vote organizers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madaresharghi..com\">madaresharghi<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"lide\">A top Iraqi court has issued arrest warrants for the elections and referendum commission chairman of the country\u2019s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region and his two aides over the controversial September 25 referendum on Kurdish independence from the rest of the Iraqi territory.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"70\">\n<p>\n\tSupreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdel Sattar Bayraqdar told AFP on Wednesday that the warrants had been issued for Hendren Mohammed Saleh, Yari Hajji Omar and Wahida Yofo Hermez.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe court ruled that the three \u201corganized the referendum in contravention of a ruling by the Iraqi supreme court,\u201d which had found the vote unconstitutional and ordered it called off.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><figcaption\/><\/figure>\n<p>\n\tBayraqdar noted that the court in Baghdad acted in response to a request from the National Security Council headed by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Iraqi government said on Monday it would\u00a0seek to bring mobile phone operators\u00a0Korek and Asiacell, which are respectively based in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) capital Erbil and Kurdish city of Sulaymaniyah, under its control and move their headquarters to the capital Baghdad.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><figcaption\/><\/figure>\n<p>\n\tThe development came a day after Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri\u00a0met with KRG President Massoud Barzani.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKurdish officials said on September 27 that the referendum on independence from Iraq was approved by more than 92 percent of the\u00a0voters.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHendren Mohammed Saleh, the head of the Kurdish region&#8217;s elections and referendum commission, said\u00a0the referendum passed with 92.73 percent support, and turnout stood at more than 72 percent.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><figcaption\/><\/figure>\n<p>\n\tHe said vote counting was complete and that the results would be considered final once they were certified by the Kurdish region&#8217;s department of justice.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Iraqi prime minister\u00a0has already demanded the annulment of\u00a0the results.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDuring a recent press conference in\u00a0Paris, Abadi\u00a0said his government did not seek\u00a0confrontation with Iraqi Kurds\u00a0but reiterated Baghdad\u2019s position that the referendum was illegal, and that problems should be solved within the framework of Iraq\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>madaresharghi A top Iraqi court has issued arrest warrants for the elections and referendum commission chairman of the country\u2019s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region and his two aides over the controversial September 25 referendum on Kurdish independence from the rest of the Iraqi territory.
